In the year 2019/2020 it had been estimated that staff turnover in adult social care was around 30%. Approximately 430,000 employees left their current position with only around 67% of these employees remaining in the field. A large proportion of these leavers left social care within their first year, the figure was much lower for those with more experience of the industry.

It is no secret that staff retention within this industry is an issue and more often than not care homes have to rely on the services of agency staff to bridge gaps in their rotas however whilst agency staff are a valuable resource to care managers, care homes will always strive to use their services as little as possible.

Staff retention is the basis of a good business and an outstanding home. Continuity of service is at its best when staff are familiar the home, with each other and with the residents.

The key to staff retention in care is the same as in any other industry, provide employees with working conditions that enable them to thrive, to advance their careers and most of all to feel valued and heard.
