At around midnight on the night of November 4th, 1605, Sir Thomas Knyvet, a justice of the peace, found Guy Fawkes lurking in a cellar below the Parliament building and ordered a search of the premises. Thirty-six barrels of gunpowder were found, and Fawkes was taken into custody. Fawkes revealed he was a participant in an English Catholic conspiracy to annihilate England’s Protestant government and replace it with Catholic leadership.
The foiling of this plot to kill the king has been commemorated annually ever since. I have fond memories of firework parties, bonfires, hot chocolate, and toffee apples. I remember the thrill of collecting pennies for the Guy and of signing my name in the air with a sparkler and I remember watching the look on the faces of my children as they experienced their first firework display.
There are so many things I like about living at Westhill Park but one thing that stands out is the effort made by the team to ensure that can continue to experience celebrations such as Bonfire Night.
This year was no different. We were treated to a stunning display, accompanied by popcorn, hot chocolate with whipped cream and sweet treats but best of all we were able to invite our friends, our families, and the local community along to enjoy it with us.
We were so lucky with the weather, it was a clear, mild evening and we were all able to congregate outside to really enjoy the colours and the atmosphere. What a special evening we had.
