The RSPB Big Garden Bird watch event takes place on 28th-30th January 2022. The public are asked to spend one hour watching and recording the birds in their garden and send the results to the RSPB. The event runs annually and was set up to supply vital information about garden birds, including the variety of breeds, their numbers and their habitat.
We had great fun taking part in this event, we had our guides ready to help us identify the birds that visit our garden although we do have a couple of extremely knowledgeable, amateur ornithologists among us who recognised a lot of them.
We have been busy this week preparing for the event, we spent a lovely afternoon making bird feeders to help attract as many birds as possible to our garden. It was a lot of fun, but I have to say it was the messiest activity that I’ve even taken part in, there was bird seed everywhere. We did however manage to create a variety of bird treats that worked perfectly, attracting a wide range of our feathered friends to our garden.
The weekend weather was perfect for bird watching, the sun shone, and the temperature was quite mild for the middle of winter. We were delighted to see so many birds, they really are beautiful creatures. We will be reporting our findings to the RSPB, it feels good to be part of such an important project.
