The NCS or National Citizen Service is a government run initiative that aims to inspire confidence in people aged 16 & 17 year old. Through work in the community the young adults learn valuable life skills, they learn to problem solve, to support each other and they learn the importance of community involvement.
Last week we were delighted to be able to welcome a group from NCS into Glenvale Park and what a wonderful bunch they were.
We spent the afternoon chatting and sharing stories, our visitors loved hearing about our residents and our residents enjoyed hearing all about the scheme and the ways in which young adults benefit from it.
Introductions over, it was time to get down to something a little more strenuous. Our home is brand new, and our garden is therefore a little empty. We have grand plans to create an oasis in which to relax and enjoy each other's company and our visitors were very keen to help us put these plans into action.
We were exceptionally lucky with the weather; it was warm and dry, and the sun was shining. We made great strides, digging and planting and the garden is already taking shape. It was just lovely to have the NCS guys along to help us, their enthusiasm was contagious, and we got so much done with their help.
I hadn't heard of NCS prior to their visit but would now champion their service wholeheartedly, if you know a young adult who would like to get involved you can find details on the government website. We had a great time with them, we do hope that they come back again soon.
