At the eleventh hour, on the eleventh day, of the eleventh month, we will remember them.
Armistice Day commemorates the ending of the first world war on the 11th of November 1918. Following the second world war this day became known as Remembrance Day to include a commemoration of all who were lost in the line of duty across all conflicts.
Remembrance Day means a lot to us, we have memories of the war and of the struggles felt following it. We experienced first-hand what many have only read about in history books, to us, as children gas masks and air raids were sadly a normality. Families were separated, loved ones were lost, homes were destroyed and none of us were the same again.
Every year people all over the world commemorate this day with church services, parades and by wearing poppies, the flower that grew on the battlefields following World War One. They gather to remember and to honour, to pay their respect and to say thank you, thank you for making the ultimate sacrifice. It is important that these fallen heroes are never forgotten.
This year we have been busy creating our own poppy displays. We are a crafty lot here and love to get creative. We used various mediums to create a beautiful wall of poppies, and each one was made with love and respect, we were honoured to hang them in place on that wall as a tribute to fathers, brothers, mothers and sisters, the heroes that made the ultimate sacrifice, we will never forget.
