Mike, one of my neighbours here at Priors Hall is a classic car enthusiast, he owned his very own classic car and took immense pride in her. He will often regale us with stories about his adventures, cruising around town with the wind in his hair, that car really brought him a lot of joy.
A couple of weeks ago the lifestyle manager, Claire arranged an incredibly special surprise for Mike and the rest of us residents here, we were treated to a wonderful trip down memory lane.
What started out as a visit from a friend who owned a classic car turned into our own classic car show. As word spread more classic car owners offered to come along and let us admire their cars, they were wonderful. We took turns to sit at the wheel and heard some fabulous stories, if only these cars could talk.
We were blessed with a beautiful day and were able to sit in the sun, sipping tea, eating cake, and swapping stories, reminiscing about the cars that we’d owned over the years.
The afternoon was such a success, we have been promised a return visit, there is even talk of turning this into an annual community event which would be marvellous.
To some people a car is simply a mode of transport, a means of getting from A to B, however for others it is so much more, it’s the journey to the church to marry your first love, it’s the trip home from the hospital with a new born child, it’s family holidays, these classic cars brought the memories flooding back and with them a great deal of happiness. It was such a thoughtful idea, and we will be talking about for weeks to come. It was absolutely wonderful.
