In 1975, the United Nations declared March 8th to be International Women's Day. According to the BBC, that date was picked to commemorate an event in 1917 when a group of women in Russia held a four-day strike to demand peace, bread, and the right to vote.
At Westhill Park we are surrounded by a lot of very special women, women who have led rich and interesting lives, women who have experienced war time and rationing, who have raised families and forged careers whilst doing so. We love to hear their stories, the way in which we live our lives has changed considerably over the last 50 years and we learn a lot from listening to our residents.
This week we held a coffee morning, this may seem like a simple event, but it is a popular one. It combines 3 of our favourite things, tea, cake, and a good old-fashioned natter. We enjoy coming together and partaking of a freshly baked treat whilst putting the world to rights over a cup of tea, it’s a wonderful way to spend a morning.
This week was International Women’s Day, a day to celebrate the achievements of women everywhere, we made this the theme of our coffee morning and enjoyed hearing each other’s stories, some of which were quite surprising. We discussed women who had inspired us and thanked the ladies on the team here for all that they do for each of us.
As the tea and coffees were served, we were informed that we would be having a visit from one of the most inspirational women in the world today, HRH Queen Elizabeth II. How we all laughed when a life-size cut out of Elizabeth was carried in. We had a wonderful time having our photographs taken with her, it was a lot of fun.
