Abington Park is Northampton's oldest and most popular park. It contains many fine features including Abington Park Museum, sports facilities, a cafe, flower displays, two lakes, and it even has a garden for the blind. Beneath the surface of the park lies the archaeological remains of the old medieval village. It is a beautiful place to visit.
We like to get down to Abington whenever we can, the weather this summer has not always been on our side but when the sun shines there is no better place to be. It’s beautifully kept, the flowers are glorious, and the lake is a view I could look at all day.
We finally seem to be experiencing a summer, well for this week anyway. The beautiful weather took us a little by surprise and resulted in us making an impromptu visit to Abington Park.
It is just wonderful to be surrounded by flowers, the sights, the smells. It is the perfect spot to watch people going about their business. There were children making the most of those last few days of freedom before the school bell rings again. There were runners in their shiny Lycra and earphones, I wonder what they were listening to?
We always enjoy meeting the dog walkers, they are often happy to stop and chat and introduce us to their four-legged friends. We give them a friendly pat, that’s the dogs not their owners.
We wander down to the lake and watch the ducks as they glide across the water, little ducklings bobbing along behind them and we watch the model boats as they sail across the lake, perfect replicas of their larger counterparts.
The park makes us happy, just like it did when we were children and mother would take us, sometimes we would take a picnic and spend a whole day there, playing ball and feeding the ducks.
After we’d taken our fill of the sights we dropped into the café for some light refreshment, socialising is thirsty work.
We are always sorry to leave the park, but we were ready for our tea. On our return we were presented with a charcuterie board, laden with meats and cheeses and we washed it all down with homemade apple cider, it had quite a kick to it.
Thank you to the lifestyle team from all of us slightly tipsy residents, what a perfect day.
